RobinsonŐs procedure, appearing in Effective Study, 1946, creates
the actual questioning, evaluating attitude necessary for improved reading
comprehension. Systematic use of SQ3R has raised achievement of students
from sixth grade through college above the achievement level of control
groups not using the procedure. The steps are outlined briefly below: Survey: The student previews the material to get the main idea, reading title, bold faced headings, summary, graphs, and illustrations. The purpose is to begin the process of relating ideas. Question: The student turns the title, main headings, or italicized words into questions. Read: The student reads in an attempt to answer the questions he/she just raised. Recite: In this self-examination, the student paraphrases the new-found knowledge in his/her own words. Review: Transfer of the new information to life situations, to further acquisition of knowledge, to class discussions--and to encourage assimilation, integration, and organization of said knowledge.
