Pathfinder for Environmental Unit: Nature Interpretation

At parks and nature preserves there are trails that people can walk and learn about the local and regional communities and ecological information. There might be a brochure and trail map that people can walk and look at features of the ecosystems, organisms and or ecology. Sometimes there are nature stations where the information can be displayed about the importance of certain species of plants to wildllife, health or their interesting biology.

In this case, students are required to plan, research and develop their own nature interpretation station that will be viewed and hopefully enjoyed by the public that visits Lake Region's new recreational trail system. Your research should take you away from the familiarity of white-tailed deer or sugar maple tree. You will want to research something ecologically or biologically unique in the northern temperate forest. Below are some topics to help get you started. Or, students can come up with their own topic which must be approved.

symbiotic relationships nutrient cycling acid rain on the forest
microanimals in the science pond invertebrate community in leaf litter special topic with lichens
fungus in the forest actinomycetes int he forest soil nematodes
conifer life cycle habitat requirements of common bats resouce competition
protists in the science pond forest mouse community cavity-dependent wildlife
field mouse community niche of the bobcat niche of the red squirrel
brood parasitism by brown-headed cowbirds & forest fragments black bear haibernation sites pileated woodpecker as keystone species
niche of the hognose snake brain worm (?) from moose to deer West Nile virus & mosquitos
moss life cycle how plant roots get food by cation exchange slime molds
giardia parasite in water medicinal value of plants soil ameba
