Advanced Placement (AP) Courses

ADVANCED PLACEMENT courses

Advanced Placement courses (such as AP Psychology) are the most rigorous courses offered by the Social Studies Department (or in any high school, public or private).

They are taught on a college level, and success requires reading, writing and study skills on that level.

To ensure that students have the appropriate skills necessary for success at this level, the department has established the following prerequisites:

"AP-level courses will be available to Grade 11 and 12 students

who have earned an 80+ average for a full year of Honors US History,

and have demonstrated exceptional academic skills, work habits and motivation."

notes:

  • AP assumes a level of writing competence comparable with Expository Writing.
  • AP Psychology assumes a strong background in biology. AP Psych students should have completed, or be currently enrolled in, AP Biology.

Notes-

1) A Grade 12 student who has earned 3 full Social Studies credits can take AP US History or AP Psychology with permission of the instructor.

2) Students who wish to withdraw from an AP course in January will receive 1/2 credit. This will appear as Intro to AP Psychology on their transcript.

Department Honors

Each year, the Social Studies department recognizes superior academic achievement with Department Honors.

Department Honors are awarded to those Juniors who have earned an average of 90 in the most challenging courses offered by the Social Studies Department during their freshman, sophomore and junior years (or an average of 87 if one of these courses is AP US History or AP Psychology).

Juniors become eligible for this recognition by completing the following three-year program:

Honors World History and

Honors US History and

AP US History or AP Psychology or AP Intro and Honors Sociology

Department Honors will also be awarded to select Seniors who have demonstrated excellent effort and achievement throughout their four-year career at Lake Region.

Lost/Damaged Books

Lost or Damaged Books

Books that have broken bindings, or have writing on, or damage to, their covers, edges or pages, will be considered to be purchased by the student. Books returned in this way will be billed to the student at replacement cost.

-Students are responsible for returning textbooks in as good a condition as they were issued.

-It is your responsibility to keep your book covered, and in a secure place when not in use. Leaving your books in unsecured places is done at your own risk.

-Do not use your book to store papers- this easily breaks the binding!

Plagiarism

Plagiarism policy

A single/minor example of plagiarism on a Social Studies assignment will result (at minimum) in a letter-grade (1O point) reduction of the final grade. Multiple examples, or a major use of plagiarism, will result in a "O", whether on a simple assignment or a complete research project.

Plagiarism is the use of any information that is copied or paraphrased from any source, or is not original to the student. Using another person's words, or reusing your own work from another class or assignment, with the claim or implication that it is original to you and/or to this assignment, is plagiarism.

('Paraphrasing' is a minor rewriting the work of others, by changing a few words within a sentence or paragraph while maintaining much of the original language and organization.)

If you are in any doubt about whether the use of material constitutes plagiarism, consult with your teacher before the assignment is due!

Topic Selection

-The topic needs to be approved by the teacher before research begins.
-Considerations: student interest, appropriateness to the curriculum, resources available

Weight

-25% to 5O% of quarter average (announced at the beginning of the project) depending on classtime devoted to research and writing.
-The thesis statement, outline, research notes, and draft will be evaluated by the teacher, as part of this overall weight.
-Daily grades will be given when classtime is devoted to Library work.

Requirements

-Title page, Outline, Body, Endnotes, Bibliography, and a blank sheet at the end for grading.
-Length requirements will be announced at the beginning of the project- 2OOO word minimum for Honors U.S. History.
-Double-spaced: typed, or ink on white lined paper
-Sources: at least 5 (at least 3 other than encyclopedias), with primary sources.

Plagiarism

-This project will require the student to establish a thesis, research facts, and explain what they have learned in their own words.
-It is the student's responsibility to provide the teacher with access to all sources used in writing this paper, and their notes (to determine their accuracy and originality).
-'Plagiarized work' is any information that is copied or paraphrased from any source, or is not original to the student. 'Paraphrasing' is rewriting the work of others, by changing words within a sentence or paragraph. A single minor example of plagerism will result in a one letter grade (1O point) reduction of the final grade. Multiple examples, or a major use of plagerism, will result in a grade of "O" for the project.

Deadlines

-The final research paper will be marked down one letter grade (1O points) for each day beyond the deadline.

Evaluation

Teachers will provide a grading rubric at the beginning of the project. This rubric will include relative weight for each part of the research process (such as :thesis, outline, notes, draft, final), how the final will be graded (weight for content and for writing/presentation); deadlines, and penalties for missed deadlines for intermediate steps.

(Note: A deadline is a deadline! Except in cases covered by school policy, teachers do not have to accept any late work, or may accept late work with a penalty- it is their discretion, so long as this is stated at the beginning of the project.)
